Jerry Van Dyke guest stars as one of Mary’s ex-boyfriends, who gets a job in the newsroom with a desk right across the room from Mary and tries to turn the old romance on again.

Murray Slaughter’s teenage daughter needs a job, and Lou Grant wants Mary to hire someone to make coffee and help out with typing and filing, so Mary thinks the problem is solved – but she’s wrong.

When the staff is trapped in the newsroom, Sue Ann decides that it’s time for a little Christmas cheer—no matter that it’s only November.

Mary’s Aunt Flo, a driven, well-known newswoman, and Lou Grant have constantly challenged each other’s journalistic abilities, though things seem to soften between them long enough for Lou to make a marriage proposal.

Mary produces a documentary, “What’s Your Sexual I.Q.?”, and is suddenly considered an authority on the subject by her friends, fellow workers and anonymous telephone callers. Phyllis pleads with Mary to tell her 12-year-old daughter, Bess, the facts of life, and Mary acquiesces. After running a survey among her friends to discover how they first learned about sex, and how they told their children, Mary tackles the subject with Bess.

Ted gets swept up in the spirit of Murray’s 20th wedding anniversary party and chooses the most public place possible to pop the question to Georgette.

Mary, Ted and Murray are sent to Hollywood for a convention, and while there, pretty newspaper reporter, Whitney Lewis, insist Ted give her a personal in-depth interview. When Ted agrees to the interview in his room, he is shocked to find Whitney nude in bed with the obvious intention of seducing him. A terrified and befuddled Ted talks his way out of the situation with help from a disbelieving Mary.

Lou has not had a date since his wife Edie left him, but he has an important banquet coming up, and Mary promises to find him a date.
