Mrs. Morgenstern visits her daughter, Rhoda, with whom she is always at odds. In her desire to bridge the generation gap, Mrs. Morgenstern talks to Phyllis and decides to test her theory of being a pal to Rhoda instead of just a mother. Rhoda plays along patiently until she finds herself with an over-amorous date.

Mary arrives home to discover her apartment has been burglarized. After she reports it to the police, two plainclothesmen arrive. One officer seems to find Mary very attractive and prolongs investigation as much as possible. Mary grows despondent when it appears there are not very many clues and the chances are slight she will recover any of her possessions. She grows even more downhearted when she finds out the insurance will only cover part of her loss. Two days later she is dumbfounded to find her apartment has again been burglarized; this time they have taken most of her furniture!

Mary Richards and Sue Ann Nivens, WJM-TV’s “Happy Homemaker,” volunteer their services as big sisters to two delinquent girls. Running out of ideas to keep the young ladies entertained, Mary and Sue Ann invite them to spend the day at station WJM-TV. But Mary doesn’t quite know how to handle the situation when money turns up missing from Murray Slaughter’s desk, and all fingers point to Francie, Mary’s “little sister.”

Phyllis Lindstrom discovers her dermatologist husband Lars is having an affair with the star of WJM-TV’s “Happy Homemaker Show,” and demands Mary’s help in saving her marriage.

The newsroom is divided when Murray, the father of three daughters, decides that he wants a son even though his wife doesn’t want to have another baby.

Mary dates a much younger man – despite the advice of friends. Should the fact that the woman is seven years older than the man keep them from having a happy relationship? Mary Richards doesn’t think so, and she ignores advice from her friends and co-worker to the contrary.

Trapped, hooked and reeled in, Lou Grant discovers he’s been had when Sue Ann Nivens, WJM-TV’s “Happy Homemaker,” finally maneuvers him to her apartment for a romantic dinner. Sue Ann realizes that she’s getting absolutely nowhere in chasing Lou — he’s outrunning her — so she decides to use some special bait and pressure Mary into helping her.

Desperate for a salary increase, Lou Grant suggests that he and Mary will have more leverage against the station if they join forces to demand a raise. However, the scheme backfires when the station refuses to increase their salary and allows them to walk out. After being out for several weeks, negotiations are reopened and Mary and Lou get their raise and return to work.
